My CTF is going to be featured at DEFCON 29 (2021)….

What is a CTF ?

A CTF is in this case a Cyber application of a military exercise called a Capture The Flag. The goal is for each team to protect thier Flag from the opposing team, through defensive or offense means. This definition is pretty good from the website :“ CTF (Capture The Flag) is a kind of information security competition that challenges contestants to solve a variety of tasks ranging from a scavenger hunt on wikipedia to basic programming exercises, to hacking your way into a server to steal data. In these challenges, the contestant is usually asked to find a specific piece of text that may be hidden on the server or behind a webpage. This goal is called the flag, hence the name! “

What is DEFCON ?

DEFCON to me is the World Series , the Tour De France ,or the Super Bowl of hacker conventions . I believe the ability to fellowship and create bonds with other information security professionals , is key to the future development of this craft. It is at this conference in particular that we have the opportunity to meet historical influencers in technology and pioneers within the craft of cybersecurity. Those who present here and attend the conference are amongst the worlds best and brightest, and benefit the technology sector and mankind immensely.

DEF CON has been a part of the hacker community for over two decades. Pick up a bit of history and origin by watching DEF CON — The Documentary, and by checking out the About Page. The DEF CON FAQ has the answers to most of the common questions you might have.

What is the CTF Called ??

Blacks In Cybersecurity CTF or BIC CTF.

What did you say SOCKS ??? How !!

Yes the DEFCON the greatest Hacker Convention / Infosec Conference in the WORLD !!.

I started building small security challenges in 2015, attaching my moniker to them , just to help me learn security practices , methodologies and implementation. To be honest at the time and even to date this has proven the best way for me to learn and retain a lot of the vulnerability steps, involved in most security incidents.

Getting involved with the community and giving back, provided me the opportunity to get my infrastructure and content featured at DEFCON 29.

Working as the Director of Red Team Operations / CTF , for Blacks In Cybersecurity, I’ve been able to support and cultivate cyber professionals within the Black , African American, BIPOC community. While I started off building challenges and provisioning cyber ranges alone , I was able to quickly gain the support of some amazingly talented Cyber Professionals. I have to take the time to say thanks for the support and creativity of my CTF Development team, without them I would be woefully behind schedule and the challenges would not be as diverse or awesome as they are.

BIC CTF Development Team:
1. Leo Pitts (Leo Pitt)
2. JR Presmy (@jayrprez)
3. Tony Carter (@xtremesecurity)

So how was this built and how did you get started ?

CTF Development is a real passion of mine. I like to build challenges , and to be honest, if there was a job , that was just to build Cyber Security Challenges all day, I would just do that and be happy !!

Alas I have decided to chase my dream and invest my own money, to design and build my own range.

I own a /24 block , and also I own a few /28’s in a Data Center in the Netherlands. This provides the network connectivity needed to support the infrastructure and provide availability for the Range(s).

I also have servers in a Colo in the U.S. in order to provide access and support to the different builds , necessary to support the Range(s) and initiatives planned for Q3 of 2022.

With the physical infrastructure in place, I have virtualization in place for redundancy and security within the challenge range.

Isn't this expensive ? any future plans ?

YES !! While this is a substantial cost , the goal of my different builds are to lower the cost of participation within the cyber realm for the minority community, and following DEFCON, I will be on boarding highschool to college students to support the physical infrastructure, and also the virtualization engineering , this is an initiative that i have to assist Black , African American, BIPOC and other underrepresented youths with getting into the Cyber Field.

Can I help ?

Yes , send your cybersecurity employees to DEFCON, continue to diversify your talent, encourage commitment to cybersecurity with each of your cyber focused staff.
